About the Typing Speed Test

The ByteTools Typing Speed Test measures how fast and how accurately you type. Pick a test length from 15 seconds to five minutes, choose a passage, and start typing — the timer begins on your first keystroke and every character you type is checked against the target as you go, correct in green and mistakes highlighted in red.

Two speeds are reported. Gross WPM counts everything you typed; net WPM counts only the characters you got right, which is the number that actually matters. Four passages cover plain common words, everyday prose, heavy punctuation and capitals, and numbers with symbols — the parts of the keyboard most people are slowest on.

Nothing you type is recorded, transmitted or stored. The whole test runs in your browser, so it works offline and no keystroke ever leaves your device. Restart as often as you like — the timer and your text reset cleanly every time.

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is typical for an adult. 50 to 60 WPM is comfortably fast, 70 WPM and above is professional territory, and most data entry and transcription roles ask for 60 WPM or more with high accuracy.

How is WPM calculated?

The standard definition counts every five characters, including spaces, as one word. Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters and divides by the minutes elapsed, so errors reduce your score rather than just your accuracy.

What is the difference between net and gross WPM?

Gross WPM measures raw output regardless of mistakes. Net WPM only credits characters that match the target text. Employers and typing certifications almost always mean net WPM when they quote a requirement.

How can I type faster?

Prioritise accuracy over speed — every mistake costs more time to fix than it saved. Learn touch typing so you never look at the keys, keep your fingers on the home row, and practise punctuation and numbers, which are most people's slowest keys.

Does this typing test record what I type?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is sent to a server, no keystrokes are logged, and no result is saved when you close the page.

Why is my accuracy lower than I expected?

Accuracy here compares every character you typed against the target, including capitals, punctuation and spacing. A single missed character shifts everything after it, which is why correcting mistakes as you go scores better than typing through them.
