About the Reverse Video

The ByteTools Reverse Video tool plays your clip backwards — the last frame becomes the first, and the audio is reversed along with it. It's the classic rewind effect used in social clips: spilled drinks un-spill, jumps land in reverse and demolition becomes assembly.

Reversing requires buffering every frame in memory before the first output frame can be written, so this tool is built for short clips. Choose to reverse only the first 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds, or the whole clip if it is short — a clear selector keeps you from running the browser out of memory.

As with every ByteTools converter, the work happens 100% locally in your browser via a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Your video is never uploaded to any server, there is no account to create and no watermark on the result — the reversed MP4 is produced on, and downloads straight from, your own machine.

How do I make a video play backwards?

Drop the clip onto this tool, pick how many seconds to reverse and click Reverse video. It re-encodes the clip with the frames and audio in reverse order, then lets you preview and download the result.

Why is there a length limit for reversing?

To reverse a video, every decoded frame must be held in memory until the end of the clip is reached — only then can they be written out backwards. In a browser that memory is limited, so reversing is capped to short segments to stay reliable. Around two minutes of 1080p is a practical ceiling.

Is the audio reversed too?

Yes — the soundtrack is reversed in step with the picture, which gives the full rewind effect. If you would rather have silence, mute the result afterwards with the Mute Video tool.

Can I reverse only part of my video?

You can reverse the first 15, 30, 60 or 120 seconds using the length selector. To reverse a section from the middle, first cut it out with the Trim Video tool, then reverse the trimmed clip here.

Does reversing upload my video anywhere?
