Sleep Debt Calculator
Log up to fourteen nights against your sleep target to see your running sleep debt, how long it takes to repay, and bedtimes in 90-minute cycles.
Hours slept each night
Enter actual sleep, not time in bed — a quarter-hour of accuracy is plenty. Nights where you slept more than your target count as a surplus and reduce the running total.
Sleep debt
9 h 30 m
Across 7 nights you slept 9 h 30 m less than your 8.0 h target — an average of 6 h 39 m a night.

Working back from your wake-up time
| Cycles | Time asleep | Go to bed at |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | 9.0 h | 21:15 |
| 5 | 7.5 h | 22:45 |
| 4 | 6.0 h | 00:15 |
| 3 | 4.5 h | 01:45 |
Each bedtime is your wake-up time minus a whole number of 90-minute cycles, minus the time it takes you to drop off. Waking at the end of a cycle rather than in the middle of deep sleep is the idea; in practice cycle length varies between 70 and 120 minutes and changes through the night, so treat 90 as an average rather than a clock you can set.
Estimates only, not medical advice. Sleep debt as a simple running total is a useful mental model, but research suggests recovery is not a clean hour-for-hour repayment — one long lie-in restores alertness only partly, and some effects of a long-run deficit take more than a weekend to clear. Persistent trouble sleeping, loud snoring with daytime sleepiness, or falling asleep unintentionally during the day are worth raising with a doctor. Your log stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
What is the Sleep Debt Calculator?
Sleep debt is the sum of your nightly target minus what you actually slept, across however many nights you log. Seven hours slept against an eight-hour target for five nights is a five-hour debt; nights above target count as a surplus and reduce it.
- Log 1 to 14 nights with a running deficit after each one
- Surplus nights offset the debt instead of being ignored
- Nights-to-repay calculation at your own catch-up rate
- Bedtime suggestions working back from wake time in 90-minute cycles
- Sleep-latency allowance so the bedtime is when to get into bed
- Average nightly sleep and total slept alongside the debt
- Copy the whole log and summary in one click

About the Sleep Debt Calculator
The ByteTools Sleep Debt Calculator turns a week or two of rough nights into one number. Set your nightly target, enter what you actually slept each night, and it totals the shortfall — showing each night's contribution and the running deficit as it builds, so you can see which nights did the damage.
It then does two useful things with that total. It works out how many nights of catching up you need at whatever extra sleep you can realistically manage, and it works backwards from your wake-up time in 90-minute sleep cycles to suggest bedtimes, including the time it takes you to actually drop off. Nights where you slept more than your target count as a surplus and pull the total back down.
Everything runs in your browser and your log is never uploaded or saved to a server. These are estimates for your own planning, not medical advice — sleep recovery is not really a clean hour-for-hour repayment, and persistent sleep problems are worth raising with a doctor.
Frequently asked questions
How do you calculate sleep debt?
Subtract the hours you actually slept from your nightly target, then add up those differences across the nights you are looking at. Five nights of seven hours against an eight-hour target is a five-hour debt. Nights where you slept more than your target count as a surplus and reduce the total.
Can you catch up on lost sleep?
Partly, but not cleanly. One long lie-in restores alertness and mood substantially, yet research suggests some effects of a long-running deficit — on attention and metabolic markers — take longer than a weekend to clear. Steadily returning to a consistent schedule beats one heroic recovery night.
How long does it take to repay sleep debt?
At an extra hour a night, roughly one night per hour of debt — so an eight-hour deficit takes about a week. Adding more than an hour or two beyond your normal need is hard to sustain, which is why the catch-up rate here is something you set rather than something the tool assumes.
How many hours of sleep do adults actually need?
Most adults need 7 to 9 hours, and the small minority who genuinely thrive on less is much smaller than the number of people who believe they are in it. Teenagers typically need 8 to 10. Your own figure is the amount after which you wake without an alarm feeling rested.
Why does the bedtime calculator use 90-minute cycles?
Because a full sleep cycle averages about 90 minutes, and waking at the end of one rather than in the middle of deep sleep tends to feel better. In practice cycles range from about 70 to 120 minutes and lengthen through the night, so treat 90 as an average rather than a clock.
Is my sleep log private?
Yes. Everything is calculated in JavaScript inside your browser and nothing is transmitted or stored on a server — closing the tab discards the log entirely.
