About the Speech to Text
The ByteTools Speech to Text tool lets you dictate with your microphone and see your words appear as text in real time. Live interim results show what the engine is hearing, and each finished phrase is appended to an editable transcript you can tidy up.
It is great for quick notes, drafting messages hands-free, capturing ideas and improving accessibility. Start and stop recognition whenever you like, then copy the finished transcript with one click.
Recognition uses your browser's Web Speech API. If your browser does not support speech recognition, a clear message tells you so. Microphone access always asks for your permission first.
Frequently asked questions
Which browsers support speech to text?
Speech recognition works best in Chromium-based browsers such as Chrome and Edge, which implement the Web Speech API. Firefox and some others do not support it yet, so the tool shows a friendly notice when it is unavailable.
Why does it ask for microphone permission?
The browser needs your consent to access the microphone before it can hear you. You will see a permission prompt the first time; allow it to dictate. You can revoke access anytime from your browser's site settings.
What are interim results?
Interim results are the engine's live best-guess of what you are saying before a phrase is finalised. They update as you speak and are then committed to the transcript, so you get instant feedback while dictating.
Can I edit the transcript afterwards?
Yes. The transcript sits in an editable text box, so you can fix punctuation, correct a misheard word or delete a section before copying. Dictation appends to whatever is already there.
Is my voice recorded or uploaded by this tool?
This tool does not store recordings. Be aware that some browsers send audio to a cloud service to perform recognition, so for highly sensitive dictation check your browser's privacy details first.
