How does the syllable counter work?
It uses the standard written-English heuristic: count vowel groups, trim silent endings like the final e in “make”, keep -le endings like “table”, and collapse diphthongs such as “ea”. This matches dictionary counts for the vast majority of everyday words.
Is the syllable count always exact?
No — English spelling doesn't encode syllables perfectly, so any automatic counter is approximate. Unusual words, names and loanwords can be off by one. For common words the heuristic agrees with dictionaries almost all the time, and totals over long texts average out well.
Can I use this to check a haiku?
Yes. Paste each line and read its syllable count from the per-word table — a traditional haiku is 5-7-5. The counts are the tool's best estimate, so double-check borderline words against how you actually pronounce them.
