What is the Tilt-Shift Photo Effect?

The miniature effect works by imitating the razor-thin depth of field you only get photographing something a few centimetres across.

How to use the Tilt-Shift Photo Effect

    Drop in a photo shot from above — a street, harbour, stadium or building site works best.

    Choose a linear band or a radial oval, then move the centre X and Y sliders onto the subject you want sharp.

    Set the in-focus band width and the transition width; rotate the band to follow a road or river.

    Raise the blur strength until the rest of the frame reads as out of focus, then push saturation and contrast for the toy-model look.

About the Tilt-Shift Photo Effect

The miniature effect works by imitating the razor-thin depth of field you only get photographing something a few centimetres across. Keep a narrow band of the picture sharp, blur everything above and below it, push the colours a little, and your brain reads the scene as a model railway rather than a real street.

You position the in-focus band yourself: linear for streets, rivers and crowds, or an oval when a single subject should be sharp. Centre, width, transition and rotation are all sliders, and the blur is composited from five progressively blurred copies of the image through a gradient mask, so the falloff from sharp to soft is smooth instead of a hard cut.

Blur is measured as a percentage of the short edge, so the preview and the full-size download look identical. All the processing happens on a canvas in your browser — the photo is never uploaded anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

What is the tilt-shift or miniature effect?

It is the look you get from a lens tilted relative to the sensor, which throws the plane of focus at an angle and leaves only a narrow strip sharp. Because that extreme shallow focus normally only happens in macro photography, a full-size scene shot this way reads as a scale model.

What kind of photo works best for tilt-shift?

Anything shot looking down from a height — a rooftop, a hill, a bridge or an upper window. A high angle with lots of small repeated objects like cars, boats or people gives your brain the strongest miniature cue.

Why boost saturation and contrast?

Painted models and toys have punchier, more uniform colour than the real world does, so lifting saturation and contrast reinforces the illusion. Around 140% saturation is a good starting point; much beyond that it starts looking like a filter rather than a model.

Should I use the linear or the radial focus band?

Use the linear band for scenes with a horizon or a road running across the frame, and rotate it to follow that line. Use the radial oval when one subject in the middle of the frame should be sharp and everything around it should fall away.
