What is the difference between a tint and a shade?
A tint is your color mixed with white, making it lighter and softer. A shade is your color mixed with black, making it darker and deeper. A related term, tone, is your color mixed with gray. Together they form the tonal range of a single hue.
How do I make a darker version of a color?
Blend it toward black. Each shade step in this tool moves a fixed percentage of the way from your color to #000000, so the 10% shade is barely darker and the 90% shade is nearly black. Pick whichever step gives the contrast you need.
How many tints and shades should a design system have?
A common pattern is a ramp of 9 to 11 steps per color, from very light to very dark, so you can assign consistent roles like surface, border, text and accent. The ten-step strips here map neatly onto that convention.
Do tints and shades keep the same hue?
Mixing toward pure white or pure black in RGB keeps the hue very close but can shift it slightly and reduce saturation near the extremes. For strictly constant hue, adjust lightness in HSL instead — but RGB blending is what most tint/shade tools use and looks natural.
Can I copy all the HEX codes at once?
