About the VAT Calculator

The ByteTools VAT Calculator adds Value Added Tax to a net price or works backwards from a VAT-inclusive total to reveal the net amount and the tax within it. Common rates — 5%, 10%, 20% (UK standard) and 23% — are provided as presets, and a custom field accepts any percentage used in your country.

It suits freelancers and small businesses preparing invoices, bookkeepers reclaiming input VAT from receipts, and consumers checking how much of a price is tax. Net, VAT and gross are always shown side by side so nothing needs recalculating.

Everything is computed locally in your browser. No figures are transmitted or stored, results update as you type, and the tool is free to use without an account.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the net price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). At the UK standard 20% rate, a £50 net price becomes 50 × 1.20 = £60, of which £10 is VAT. The Add VAT mode shows all three numbers instantly.

How do I remove VAT from a gross amount?

Divide the gross by (1 + rate ÷ 100) — don't just subtract 20%. A £120 gross at 20% VAT contains 120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net and £20 VAT. Subtracting 20% of £120 would wrongly give £96.

What is the VAT rate in the UK?

The UK standard rate is 20%, with a reduced 5% rate for items like domestic energy and children's car seats, and a 0% rate for most food and children's clothing. Use the 20% preset or the custom field for reduced rates.

What is the difference between VAT and GST?

They are essentially the same consumption tax under different names — VAT in Europe and the UK, GST in India, Australia, Canada and elsewhere. Both are charged as a percentage of the sale price at each stage of supply.

Why is the VAT fraction for 20% equal to 1/6?

In a 20% VAT-inclusive price, tax is 20 parts of every 120 — which simplifies to 1/6 of the gross. That's why accountants divide a gross figure by 6 to find the VAT element at the 20% rate.
