About the Vowel and Consonant Counter
The Vowel and Consonant Counter counts every vowel and consonant in your text the moment you paste it. You get the totals, a per-vowel breakdown showing how many of each of a, e, i, o and u appear, the vowel-to-consonant ratio, and an optional word-by-word table for detailed checking.
It is a classroom staple — phonics exercises, spelling homework and linguistics assignments all ask for vowel counts — and it is just as handy for word games, naming brainstorms and puzzle construction. A toggle lets you count Y as a vowel or as a consonant, since English genuinely uses it both ways.
Counting runs 100% locally in your browser with live updates. Your text is never uploaded anywhere, and the tool works offline.
Frequently asked questions
Is Y a vowel or a consonant?
Both, depending on the word: it acts as a vowel in “gym” and “fly” but as a consonant in “yes” and “yellow”. This tool lets you choose how to count it, since simple counters cannot detect the role automatically.
Does it count accented vowels like é or ü?
Yes. Accented Latin vowels are recognised and added to the count of their base letter, so “café” counts two vowels: a and é (counted as e).
What counts as a consonant here?
Any letter that is not a vowel — so B through Z minus e, i, o, u, a, and Y is counted on whichever side you chose. Digits, spaces and punctuation are ignored entirely.
Can I see vowel counts for each word separately?
Yes. Enable the per-word table and each word appears with its own vowel and consonant counts — useful for marking exercises or picking words with a specific pattern.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. All counting happens in your browser in real time, so your text stays completely private.
