Can I combine bold and italic in one WhatsApp message?

What is monospace formatting in WhatsApp?

Why don't the markers turn into formatting when I paste?

Formatting appears only after the message is sent — in the compose box you still see the raw markers. Make sure there is no space between the marker and the text (*bold* works, * bold * does not).
