About the Remove Silence from Audio
This tool automatically detects and removes silent passages from an audio file — leading silence before the recording starts, and every quiet gap longer than a length you choose. The result is a tighter file where the content flows without dead air.
It is ideal for podcast episodes with long pauses, lecture and meeting recordings, dictation and voice memos. You control what counts as silence with a threshold in decibels, and how long a pause must be before it gets cut, so natural breathing pauses can be kept while awkward gaps disappear.
Silence detection and removal run entirely in your browser through WebAssembly ffmpeg. Nothing is uploaded, so confidential meeting audio and private voice notes stay on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What threshold should I use for silence detection?
−40 dB is a good starting point for clean recordings. If background noise is being kept as 'sound', try −30 dB so quiet hiss counts as silence; if quiet speech is being cut, move toward −50 dB so only near-silence is removed.
Will it cut out the natural pauses in speech?
Only pauses longer than the minimum gap you set are removed. With a 0.5–1 second minimum, normal breathing pauses survive while long stretches of dead air are cut. Increase the minimum gap if the result sounds too rushed.
How much shorter will my recording get?
It depends entirely on how much silence it contains — the tool shows the output size and the preview player shows the new duration. Podcast raw takes with lots of pauses often shrink by 10–30%.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Detection and removal run entirely in your browser using WebAssembly ffmpeg. Confidential recordings never leave your device.
Can I undo the removal if too much was cut?
Your original file is never modified — the tool produces a new MP3. If the result cuts too aggressively, adjust the threshold or minimum gap and run it again on the original.
