About the Blur Video

The ByteTools Blur Video tool softens an entire clip with an adjustable gaussian or box blur — useful for background loops, website hero videos, obscuring an entire sensitive recording or creating dreamy b-roll. A strength slider takes you from a subtle soften to a heavy, unrecognisable blur.

It also includes a blurred-background mode for vertical reframing: your landscape clip is placed sharp in the middle of a 9:16 canvas, with a blurred, zoomed copy of itself filling the space above and below — the standard look for posting widescreen footage to Reels, Shorts and TikTok.

Frequently asked questions

Can I blur just one part of the video, like a face or a licence plate?

This tool blurs the whole frame or builds a blurred background — it does not track regions. Full region blurring on video needs frame-accurate masking, which is best done in a video editor. For images, our Blur Part of an Image tool does exactly that.

What is the blurred-background mode for?

It converts a landscape clip into a 1080×1920 vertical video: the original stays sharp and centered while a blurred, enlarged copy fills the top and bottom. It's the standard way to post widescreen footage to vertical platforms without ugly black bars.

What is the difference between gaussian and box blur?

Gaussian blur is smoother and more natural-looking because pixels are weighted by distance; box blur averages a square neighbourhood, which is computationally cheaper and looks slightly flatter at high strengths. For most uses, gaussian is the better default.

Is a heavy blur enough to anonymise a video?

A strong blur makes faces and text unreadable in the output, but remember the blur is baked in by re-encoding — it cannot be undone from the output file. Keep the strength high (30+) if anonymity matters, and check the preview carefully before sharing.

Is my footage uploaded while blurring?

No. The blur is computed entirely in your browser with WebAssembly — nothing is sent to a server, which is exactly what you want when the reason for blurring is privacy.
