What is the Crop Video?

The ByteTools Crop Video tool cuts away the parts of the frame you don't want. Pick a preset ratio like 16:9, 9:16, square or 4:5 and the tool crops the largest matching region from the center, or switch to custom mode and enter exact pixel width, height and offsets for full control.

  • Preset ratios: 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 and 4:3, centered automatically
  • Custom pixel mode with exact width, height and X/Y offsets
  • Dimensions auto-rounded to even numbers for H.264
  • 100% local processing — your video is never uploaded
  • Built-in preview player before you download
  • Free, unlimited and watermark-free

About the Crop Video

The ByteTools Crop Video tool cuts away the parts of the frame you don't want. Pick a preset ratio like 16:9, 9:16, square or 4:5 and the tool crops the largest matching region from the center, or switch to custom mode and enter exact pixel width, height and offsets for full control.

It is handy for removing black bars, cutting a screen recording down to one window, reframing a landscape clip for vertical feeds or trimming distracting edges out of phone footage. Output dimensions are automatically rounded to even numbers so the H.264 encoder always accepts them.

Everything runs 100% locally in your browser using a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Your video is never uploaded to a server — no accounts, no size games, no watermark — so private footage stays entirely on your own device, and the tool keeps working even offline once the engine has loaded.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a video without installing software?

Drop your clip onto this page, choose a ratio or enter exact pixels, and click Crop video. The cropping runs inside your browser with WebAssembly, so there is nothing to install and the file never leaves your device.

Does cropping a video reduce its quality?

The remaining picture is re-encoded with H.264 at a quality level (CRF 23) that is visually very close to the source. The cropped-away pixels are simply removed, so the region you keep looks essentially the same as before.

What do the X and Y offsets mean in custom mode?

X is how many pixels from the left edge the crop starts, and Y is the distance from the top. Together with the width and height they define the exact rectangle that is kept, so width plus X must fit inside the original frame.

Can I crop a video to a square or vertical format?

Yes. Choose the 1:1 preset for a square or 9:16 for vertical, and the tool cuts the largest centered region with that shape. If you also want bars instead of cutting, use the Video Aspect Ratio Converter instead.

Why must the crop size be an even number?

H.264, the codec used for the MP4 output, only encodes frames with even widths and heights. The tool rounds your values down to the nearest even number automatically so the conversion never fails over a one-pixel mismatch.
