About the Car Loan Calculator

The ByteTools Car Loan Calculator turns a dealer quote into the number that actually matters: your monthly payment. Enter the vehicle price, any trade-in value, your down payment, the sales-tax rate and dealer fees, and it works out the amount financed and applies the standard auto-loan payment formula to it.

It is designed for anyone comparing finance offers or negotiating at a dealership. Because sales tax on a trade-in is handled differently from state to state, you can choose whether tax is charged on the full price or only on the price after the trade-in credit — so the estimate matches your local rules instead of a generic assumption.

All arithmetic happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so you can use real prices and real trade-in figures safely. Results are estimates for comparison only and are not financial advice; your final contract will govern the true numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a car payment?

Work out the amount financed first — price minus trade-in and down payment, plus sales tax and any financed fees — then apply the loan payment formula: payment = L × i ÷ (1 − (1 + i)^−n). This calculator does both steps for you as you type.

Does a trade-in reduce the sales tax I pay?

In most US states yes: sales tax is charged on the price after the trade-in credit, which can save hundreds of dollars. A handful of states tax the full purchase price regardless. Use the toggle to match your state's rule.

Is a longer car loan cheaper?

A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest, and it keeps you in negative equity for longer because cars depreciate faster than the loan amortizes. Compare the total cost figure, not just the monthly payment.

What is a good down payment on a car?

A common guideline is 20% on a new car and 10% on a used one. A bigger down payment reduces the amount financed, lowers the payment and total interest, and protects you from owing more than the car is worth.

Does this calculator include insurance and fuel?

No. It covers the loan itself — principal, interest, tax and financed fees. Insurance, fuel, maintenance and registration renewals are ongoing running costs rather than part of the finance contract.
