About the Chinese Zodiac Calculator

The ByteTools Chinese Zodiac Calculator finds your animal sign and its associated element from your birth date. It uses an embedded table of actual Lunar New Year dates from 1900 to 2050, so a birthday in January or early February is assigned to the correct zodiac year rather than the Gregorian one.

That detail is the whole point. Someone born on 20 January 2023 is a Tiger, not a Rabbit, because the Year of the Rabbit did not begin until 22 January that year. Calculators that simply divide the Gregorian year by twelve get these birthdays wrong, and there are six weeks of them every year.

You also get the sexagenary cycle position — the 60-year combination of one of ten heavenly stems with one of twelve animals — plus the yin or yang polarity and the other years that share your sign. It all runs in your browser; no birth details are uploaded.

What Chinese zodiac animal am I if I was born in January?

It depends on the Lunar New Year date for that year. Chinese New Year falls between 21 January and 20 February, so anyone born before it belongs to the previous animal year. This calculator checks the actual date rather than assuming 1 January.

What are the five Chinese zodiac elements?

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water cycle in that order, each covering two consecutive years — one yang and one yin. Combined with the twelve animals they produce the 60-year sexagenary cycle, so a full pairing such as Wood Dragon repeats only every 60 years.

What year is the Year of the Dragon?

Dragon years recur every twelve years: 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 and 2024, with the next in 2036. Each has a different element, so 2024 was the Wood Dragon and 2012 was the Water Dragon.

What is the sexagenary cycle?

It is the traditional 60-year count that pairs ten heavenly stems with twelve earthly branches, the branches being the familiar animals. Because 10 and 12 have a lowest common multiple of 60, each specific combination comes round once every 60 years, which is why a 60th birthday is significant.

Does the Chinese zodiac year start on the same date every year?

No. The zodiac year begins at Chinese New Year, which is set by the lunisolar calendar and therefore moves within a roughly one-month window each year. That is why a fixed table of dates from 1900 to 2050 is embedded in this tool.
