How to use the Class Timetable Generator

About the Class Timetable Generator

The ByteTools Class Timetable Generator builds the week from real times rather than generic slot numbers. Give it a start time, a period length, how many teaching periods there are and where break and lunch fall, and it works out every start and end time for you. Each row is then editable, so an odd assembly period or a shortened Friday is no problem.

Type subjects straight into the grid and each one picks up a colour derived from its name, so the same subject is the same colour everywhere in the week and the balance of the timetable is visible at a glance. Break rows span the full width and are shaded. Weeks of five, six or seven days are all supported.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a class timetable for school?

Start by generating the period rows from your school's start time and period length, then type each subject into the day and period grid. The layout, colours and printing are handled for you.

Can I add break and lunch to the timetable?

Yes. Say which period break and lunch follow and how long they last, and rows are inserted at the right times. You can also switch any existing row to a break, which makes it span the whole width with its own label.

Is my timetable saved if I close the tab?

Yes. The days, period rows, subjects and title are stored in your browser's local storage, so reopening the page brings your timetable back. It stays on your device and clearing site data removes it.

Why is each subject a different colour?

The colour comes from a hash of the subject name, so the same name always produces the same colour across the whole grid without you assigning anything. It makes an unbalanced week — four maths lessons on a Tuesday — obvious immediately.

Can I open the timetable in Excel or Google Sheets?

Download the CSV. It has one row per period with the times in the first column and one column per day, and opens directly in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets for further editing.
