Names are assembled from hand-written syllable tables — a word-initial syllable, an optional middle syllable and a word-final syllable, each style with its own sound. A seeded generator drives every choice, so the same seed always rebuilds the same list. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

What is the Fantasy Name Generator?

Every fantasy race in this generator has its own syllable table, which is why elf names come out flowing and vowel-heavy while orc names come out short and harsh.

  • Seven styles, each with its own syllable tables
  • Optional surnames, clan names and epithets
  • Tavern names and compound place names included
  • Seeded, so any list can be rebuilt exactly
  • Duplicates filtered out within a batch
  • Copy or download as TXT, entirely offline

About the Fantasy Name Generator

Every fantasy race in this generator has its own syllable table, which is why elf names come out flowing and vowel-heavy while orc names come out short and harsh. A name is assembled from a word-initial syllable, an optional middle syllable and a word-final syllable, with each style weighted so that three-part names appear at the right frequency for that culture.

Choose from elf, dwarf, orc, human and dragon names, plus two useful extras: tavern names built as The Adjective Noun, and place names compounded from a prefix and a suffix. For the character styles you can add a surname or clan name and an epithet, turning a bare first name into something a game master can drop straight into a session.

A seeded generator drives every choice, so noting down the seed lets you rebuild the exact same list later — handy when you are writing a campaign across several sessions. All the syllable tables ship with the page and every name is built in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and it works offline.

Frequently asked questions

How does a fantasy name generator make names sound like a specific race?

Each style has its own pool of syllables and its own rule for how often a middle syllable appears. Elvish syllables are vowel-rich and end softly, dwarvish ones are consonant-heavy and blunt. The pattern, not a word list, is what carries the flavour.

Can I get the same names back later?

Yes. Note the seed shown in the seed box. Typing that seed with the same style and options rebuilds the identical list, which is useful when you are naming a cast across several writing sessions.

Can I use these names in a published game or novel?

Yes. The names are generated from syllable fragments rather than copied from any source, so they are yours to use. As always, it is worth searching a name you plan to build a brand around.

Why do tavern names not have surnames?

Tavern names use a different pattern entirely — The plus an adjective plus a noun, like The Rusty Anchor — so a surname or epithet would not make sense. The options are hidden for that style and for place names.

How many different names can it produce?

Each character style combines roughly twenty initial syllables, a dozen middles and a dozen endings, which is thousands of first names before surnames and epithets multiply it much further. Duplicates within one batch are removed automatically.
