About the Team Name Generator

The Team Name Generator combines curated adjective and noun lists into names that actually sound like a team. Pick a theme — sports, gaming and esports, quiz night, office and work, or general purpose — and the noun list changes to match, so a quiz team gets Brainiacs and Quizzards while a five-a-side side gets Panthers and Cyclones.

Four naming patterns are available: the classic The Blank Blank, a plain adjective and noun pair, alliteration where both words share a first letter, and a noun paired with a collective such as Squad or Union. Alliteration only picks letters that start both an adjective and a noun in your chosen theme, so it never quietly fails to alliterate.

The best part is the lock. When a name jumps out at you, press the padlock beside it and press reroll — locked names stay exactly where they are while everything else is replaced. A maximum character limit keeps results short enough to fit on a shirt or a scoreboard. All word lists ship with the page and every name is built in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I come up with a good team name?

Pick a theme that matches the occasion, then look for a name that is short, easy to chant and easy to spell. Alliteration makes a name far more memorable, which is why so many real teams use it. Generate a batch, lock the two or three that stand out, and reroll until one wins.

What does locking a name do?

Locking pins a name to its slot. When you press reroll, every unlocked slot gets a new name while the locked ones stay put, so you can build a shortlist gradually instead of losing a good name to the next roll.

Why is there a maximum character limit?

Long names get truncated on scoreboards, league tables and shirt backs. The limit filters out anything too long before you see it. Raise it if you want more elaborate names, or lower it for something punchy.

Are these team names already taken?

Some will be — the word lists are made of ordinary English words, so common combinations certainly exist somewhere. For a casual league or quiz night that does not matter. Search first if you plan to build a brand or buy a domain.

Can I use it for esports or gaming clan names?

Yes. Choose the Gaming and esports theme for nouns like Sentinels, Wraiths and Voidwalkers, and try the noun-plus-collective pattern for names in the style of a clan tag.
