Fiscal Year Calculator

Map any date to its fiscal year, quarter, period and week for any fiscal start month, including retail 4-4-5, 4-5-4 and 5-4-4 week-based calendars.

Fiscal calendars differ by country and by company — the UK and India start in April, Australia in July, the US federal government in October, and many retailers use a 52-week week-based year instead of months. Set the options below to match your own organisation; nothing here is assumed to be universal.

About the Fiscal Year Calculator

The ByteTools Fiscal Year Calculator places a date inside your organisation's financial calendar. Choose the month your fiscal year starts in and the tool returns the fiscal year label, the quarter, the period and the fiscal week, plus how many days into the year the date sits and the start and end date of all four quarters.

Fiscal calendars are a convention, not a standard. The UK and India start in April, Australia in July, the US federal government in October, and plenty of companies pick their own month — so nothing is assumed here. You also choose whether the year is named after the calendar year it starts in or the one it ends in.

Retailers who count in whole weeks are covered by the 4-4-5, 4-5-4 and 5-4-4 patterns, which build a 52-week year from a start date you set and list all twelve periods. Every calculation runs 100% locally in your browser, so your reporting dates and fiscal calendar are never uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What is a fiscal year?

A fiscal year is the twelve-month period an organisation uses for accounting and reporting, and it need not start in January. The UK and India start in April, Australia in July and the US federal government in October, so one date can sit in different fiscal years for different bodies.

Is FY 2026 the year it starts or the year it ends?

Both conventions are in use. A UK fiscal year running April 2025 to March 2026 is usually called FY 2026, after the year it ends, while the US federal year is named after the year it starts. The naming option here lets you match whichever your organisation uses.

What is a 4-4-5 calendar?

A 4-4-5 calendar splits each quarter into periods of four, four and five weeks, so every period ends on the same weekday and every quarter is exactly thirteen weeks. Retailers use it because week-on-week and quarter-on-quarter comparisons then stay like for like.

Why is my retail fiscal year only 364 days?

Fifty-two weeks is 364 days, one day short of a normal year, so a week-based calendar drifts by a day or two each year. Real retailers add a fifty-third week every five or six years to catch up, which is why the tool asks you to set each year's start date rather than inferring it.

How is the fiscal quarter worked out?

For a calendar-month year, quarter one is the first three months from your chosen start month and each following quarter is the next three. For retail calendars, quarters are thirteen-week blocks. Either way the quarter containing your date is highlighted in the table.
