Frequently asked questions

How do you add two fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator (the product of the two denominators always works), add the numerators, then reduce. For example 1/3 + 1/4 becomes 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. The calculator does this for you and shows each step.

How do you divide fractions?

To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal — flip the second fraction and multiply. So 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. Dividing by zero (a zero numerator on the second fraction) is undefined and the tool will flag it.

What is an improper fraction versus a mixed number?

An improper fraction has a numerator larger than its denominator, like 7/4. A mixed number writes the same value as a whole part plus a proper fraction, like 1 3/4. This calculator shows both forms so you can use whichever your assignment asks for.

Does the calculator reduce the answer automatically?
