About the Fraction Calculator

The ByteTools Fraction Calculator works out the sum, difference, product or quotient of two fractions and shows the answer four ways β€” as an improper fraction, reduced to lowest terms, as a mixed number and as a decimal. It is built for students learning fractions, parents helping with homework and anyone scaling a recipe or measurement.

Enter each numerator and denominator, pick an operation, and the tool reduces the result automatically using the greatest common divisor. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript β€” nothing is uploaded to a server, so it stays fast and completely private.

The working steps are laid out so you can see how the answer was reached, which makes it a genuine learning aid rather than a black box. Copy any result with one click to paste it into your notes or homework.

Frequently asked questions

How do you add two fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator (the product of the two denominators always works), add the numerators, then reduce. For example 1/3 + 1/4 becomes 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12. The calculator does this for you and shows each step.

How do you divide fractions?

To divide by a fraction, multiply by its reciprocal β€” flip the second fraction and multiply. So 2/3 Γ· 4/5 = 2/3 Γ— 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. Dividing by zero (a zero numerator on the second fraction) is undefined and the tool will flag it.

What is an improper fraction versus a mixed number?

An improper fraction has a numerator larger than its denominator, like 7/4. A mixed number writes the same value as a whole part plus a proper fraction, like 1 3/4. This calculator shows both forms so you can use whichever your assignment asks for.

Does the calculator reduce the answer automatically?

Yes. After each operation it divides the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor to express the result in lowest terms. It also keeps the unreduced improper fraction so you can see where the simplification came from.

Can I use negative fractions?

Yes. Enter a negative sign on either numerator and the calculator handles the sign correctly across all four operations, normalising it onto the numerator in the final answer.
