About the Fraction Simplifier

The ByteTools Fraction Simplifier reduces a fraction to its lowest terms by dividing the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. It shows the GCD it used, the simplified fraction, the equivalent mixed number and the decimal value so you understand exactly how the reduction works.

It is ideal for maths homework, adjusting recipe quantities or tidying up measurements. Simplifying 18/24 to 3/4, for example, takes one step and the GCD (6) is shown alongside the answer.

Everything is calculated locally in your browser using JavaScript, so nothing is uploaded and there is no waiting on a server. Copy any form of the answer with a single click.

Frequently asked questions

How do you simplify a fraction to its lowest terms?

Find the greatest common divisor (GCD) of the numerator and denominator, then divide both by it. For 18/24 the GCD is 6, so 18/24 = 3/4. A fraction is in lowest terms when the only common divisor left is 1.

What is the greatest common divisor?

The greatest common divisor is the largest whole number that divides two numbers with no remainder. This tool finds it with Euclid's algorithm, which repeatedly replaces the larger number with the remainder until one value reaches zero.

How do I know a fraction is already simplified?

If the greatest common divisor of the numerator and denominator is 1, the fraction cannot be reduced further. When that happens the calculator tells you the fraction is already in lowest terms.

Can this simplify improper fractions?

Yes. It reduces improper fractions like 24/18 to 4/3 and also shows the mixed-number form, 1 1/3, so you can use whichever representation you need.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The reduction happens entirely in your browser with JavaScript. No numbers are uploaded, logged or stored, so the tool works offline and keeps your work private.
