Verbs to avoid, and what to use instead
- understand — You cannot see understanding — only what a learner does with it. Try: explain, summarise, interpret, predict.
- know — Knowing is a state, not a performance. Try: list, define, identify, state.
- appreciate — Appreciation is an attitude, not an assessable behaviour. Try: justify, critique, compare, defend.
- learn — Learning is the goal of the whole lesson, not the observable outcome. Try: apply, demonstrate, produce.
- comprehend — Same problem as “understand” — nothing is observable. Try: explain, paraphrase, outline.
- grasp — Informal and unmeasurable. Try: describe, illustrate, solve.
- be aware of — Awareness cannot be marked. Try: identify, recognise, list.
- be familiar with — Familiarity has no threshold you can test. Try: describe, match, classify.
- realise — An internal event, not an observable one. Try: explain, conclude, justify.
- believe — Belief is not assessable and rarely appropriate as an outcome. Try: argue, defend, evaluate.
- value — An affective disposition, not a performance. Try: prioritise, justify, appraise.
- enjoy — A feeling, not a behaviour a rubric can capture. Try: participate in, produce, present.
- think — Too broad to assess — say what the thinking produces. Try: analyse, compare, evaluate.
- study — Describes the activity, not the outcome. Try: summarise, analyse, report.
- cover — Describes what the teacher does, not what the learner can do. Try: explain, apply, demonstrate.
- internalise — Unobservable jargon. Try: apply, justify, transfer.
- memorise — Names a study strategy rather than an assessable outcome. Try: recall, state, reproduce.
Bloom levels come from the revised taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001); a verb can legitimately sit at more than one level depending on the task, so treat the tag as a prompt rather than a verdict. Every objective is assembled in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

About the Learning Objective Generator
A good learning objective says who does what, under what conditions, and how well. This tool builds that sentence from four fields in ABCD form, or rearranges the same material into a time-bound SMART sentence, and shows the result as you type.
The verb is where objectives usually go wrong. Choose from sixty observable verbs grouped by revised Bloom level, or type your own and have it checked: verbs like understand, know, appreciate and be aware of are flagged with an explanation and three observable replacements, because a marker cannot see understanding — only what a learner does with it.

What is an ABCD learning objective?
ABCD stands for audience, behaviour, condition and degree. It gives you a sentence like “Given a labelled cross-section, students will be able to explain how sedimentary rock forms, naming at least three stages in the correct order.” Each part answers a question a marker would otherwise have to guess at.
Why can't I use “understand” in a learning objective?
Because nobody can observe understanding directly. You can only observe what a learner does with it — explaining, summarising, predicting, applying. Swapping “understand” for one of those makes the objective assessable without changing what you actually want.
What is the difference between SMART and ABCD objectives?
ABCD is the classic instructional-design structure and focuses on the conditions and the standard of performance. SMART adds an explicit time frame and is more common in training and professional development. This tool writes the same material either way.
How many learning objectives should a lesson have?
Two or three is usual for a single lesson; more than that and the lesson is probably trying to do too much. A whole course or unit will normally list five to ten. Build the list here and paste it straight into your plan.
Is the Bloom level shown always correct?
Treat it as a prompt rather than a verdict. The same verb can sit at different levels depending on the task — “compare” is understanding when the differences were taught, and analysis when the learner has to find them.
