The page returns the weighted score as a percentage and a letter grade, with the arithmetic printed underneath.

Level scales are configurable because rubrics are: choose 0–4, 1–4, 1–5, 1–6, or set your own maximum. The percentage-to-letter cutoffs are editable too, since grading bands differ between schools and even between courses in one department.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert a rubric score to a percentage?

Multiply each criterion's level by its weight and add them up, then divide by the total weight times the highest possible level. A 3 out of 4 weighted 2 plus a 4 out of 4 weighted 1 gives 10 out of 12, or 83.3 percent.

What does weighting a rubric criterion do?

It changes how much that criterion moves the final score. A criterion with weight 3 counts three times as much as one with weight 1. Equal weights of 1 across every row give each criterion the same say.

On a 1 to 5 rubric, is a level 1 worth zero?

Not in this calculator. Levels are treated as equal steps, so a 1 out of 5 is worth 20 percent rather than nothing. If your rubric is meant to bottom out at zero, choose the 0 to 4 scale instead.

What is the difference between an analytic and a holistic rubric?

An analytic rubric scores several criteria separately and combines them, which is what this tool does. A holistic rubric gives one overall judgement against a single description, so there is nothing to weight or combine.

Can I use my school's own grade cutoffs?

Yes. The cutoff box takes any set of letter and minimum-percentage pairs, so you can enter a 93/85/77 scale, a pass or fail split, or a completely custom set of band names.

Is any student information uploaded?

No. The rubric, the criteria names and the scores are all held in your browser tab and calculated there. Nothing is transmitted to a server, so the page is safe to use with real student work.
