What is the N-up PDF?

Frequently asked questions

How do I print 4 pages on one sheet as a PDF file?

Load your document, choose the 4-up layout, pick A4 or Letter as the sheet size and click Create N-up PDF. You get a real file with four pages arranged on each sheet, which you can print, email or archive — not just a one-off print setting.

What does N-up mean?

N-up is the printing term for placing N document pages onto a single physical sheet. 2-up puts two pages side by side, 4-up arranges four in a 2×2 grid, and so on. It is the standard way to save paper on handouts and drafts.

Will the text still be readable at 9-up?

Text is placed as vector content, so it stays perfectly sharp — but it is only about a third of its original height. 9-up works well for thumbnails and slide overviews; for anything you have to read closely, 2-up or 4-up is more comfortable.

What is the difference between the margin and the gutter?

The margin is the white space around the outside edge of the sheet, which keeps content clear of the printer's unprintable border. The gutter is the space between neighbouring cells, which stops adjacent pages from running into each other.

Can I use this to make a booklet?

Not directly. Booklet printing needs pages reordered into an imposition sequence (8, 1, 2, 7 and so on) before pairing them. This tool places pages in their natural order, which is what you want for handouts and drafts.
