About the Number Line Generator

Values can be typed as whole numbers, decimals or fractions — 1/4 and 1 1/2 are both understood — and the labels follow suit.

Tick values are worked out with exact fraction arithmetic rather than floating point, so a line in quarters or thirds labels as 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 instead of 0.7500000001. Mark individual points for plotting exercises, or shade an interval with open or closed endpoints to show an inequality such as 2 ≤ x < 6 the way a textbook draws it.

Frequently asked questions

How do you show an inequality on a number line?

Shade the part of the line the inequality covers and mark the endpoints: a filled circle means the value is included (≤ or ≥) and a hollow circle means it is excluded (< or >). Choose the matching bracket style here and the circles are drawn for you.

Can I make a number line with fractions?

Yes. Type fractions directly into the start, end and interval boxes — 1/4, 3/8 and mixed numbers like 1 1/2 all work. Set the label style to Fractions and every tick is labelled as a reduced fraction or mixed number.

Why does it say my range does not divide evenly?

The line only draws when the distance from start to end is a whole number of intervals. Going from 0 to 10 in steps of 3 would need 3.33 ticks, so either change the end value to 9 or 12, or pick an interval that divides the range.

How do I make a blank number line for students to label?

Set the label style to “No labels”. The ticks and the line are drawn but the numbers are left off, which is the standard format for asking students to place values themselves.

What are minor ticks for?

They divide each labelled interval into smaller unlabelled steps, so a line labelled every whole number can still show tenths. Set the count to the number of ticks between labels — four minor ticks turn each unit into fifths.
