About the Overtime Pay Calculator

The ByteTools Overtime Pay Calculator works out your gross pay when some hours are paid at an overtime rate. Enter your hourly rate, your regular hours and your overtime hours, then set the overtime multiplier — the classic 'time and a half' is 1.5, but you can use double time or any other factor — and it shows regular pay, overtime pay and the combined total.

It is handy for hourly workers checking a paycheque, shift workers planning extra hours and managers estimating payroll. The overtime rate is simply your base rate multiplied by the factor you choose, so the math stays clear and easy to verify.

All calculations run locally in your browser with nothing uploaded, so your pay details stay private. Results are estimates based on the numbers you enter and are not payroll or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is overtime pay calculated?

Overtime pay is your overtime hours multiplied by your hourly rate times the overtime multiplier. For a $20 rate at 1.5×, each overtime hour pays $30. This calculator adds that to your regular pay — regular hours times your base rate — to give total gross earnings.

What does time and a half mean?

Time and a half means your overtime hours are paid at 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. It is the most common overtime multiplier in many places, though some hours or holidays are paid at double time (2×). You can set whichever multiplier applies to you.

What counts as overtime hours?

Overtime is usually hours worked beyond a standard threshold, such as 40 in a week, but the exact rules depend on your employer and local law. This tool does not assume a threshold — you simply enter how many hours are paid at the overtime rate.

Is overtime pay taxed differently?

Overtime earnings are generally taxed the same way as regular pay; they can just push more of your income into a higher withholding band on that cheque. This calculator shows gross overtime pay, so apply your own tax rate to estimate the take-home amount.

Are my pay figures private?

Yes. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is uploaded or stored, so your rate and hours stay completely private.
