About the PDF Header & Footer

The ByteTools PDF Header & Footer tool stamps a line of text along the top and bottom of every page. Type the wording, choose the alignment, margin, size and colour, and use the {n} and {total} placeholders to insert live page numbers such as "Page 3 of 24".

The text is drawn as selectable Helvetica directly into the file, all inside your browser. Your document is never uploaded, so client reports and confidential bundles stay on your own machine.

It is built for documents that were merged, scanned or exported without running heads: court bundles that need a case reference on every page, tender responses with a company name in the footer, and handouts that need a date stamp.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a header and footer to an existing PDF?

Load the PDF here, type your header and footer text, pick the alignment and size, and click Add Header & Footer. Every page is stamped and the finished file downloads immediately — no Acrobat licence and no Word round-trip.

Can I put the page number in the footer automatically?

Yes. Type {n} where the page number should go and {total} for the total count, so "Page {n} of {total}" becomes "Page 1 of 12", "Page 2 of 12" and so on across the document.

Will the header overlap my existing content?

It is placed in the margin area, a set distance from the page edge that you control. If your document already prints close to the edges, increase the margin value or reduce the font size to keep everything readable.

Can I skip the header and footer on the cover page?

Yes — tick "Skip the first page" and page one is left untouched while every following page is stamped. That is the usual convention for reports and dissertations with a title page.

Is the added text selectable and searchable?

Yes. Headers and footers are drawn as real Helvetica text rather than an image, so they can be selected, copied and found with Ctrl+F, and they print crisply at any resolution.
