Podcast Ad Revenue Calculator

Estimate podcast sponsorship income from downloads, pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll CPMs and fill rates, with host-read versus programmatic blending and a network cut.

Ad slots per episode

Fill rate matters more than CPM for most shows: an unsold slot earns nothing no matter what it is priced at, so a 60% fill at a high CPM often loses to a 95% fill at a modest one.

Formula: revenue per episode = Σ over slots of downloads × CPM ÷ 1,000 × fill rate × slot count, then multiplied by episodes per month and reduced by the network cut. CPMs vary hugely by genre, audience country and whether the ad is host-read, so enter the rates from your own host or sales partner. Nothing is fetched and nothing is uploaded — this runs entirely in your browser.

What is the Podcast Ad Revenue Calculator?

A podcast ad revenue calculator that computes income per episode as the sum over ad slots of downloads × CPM ÷ 1,000 × fill rate, with independent pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll rates, then scales it by episodes per month and removes any network or agency cut.

  • Independent CPM, fill rate and slot count for pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll
  • Host-read versus programmatic blending across all slots
  • Network or agency cut applied after gross, with the amount shown
  • Revenue-by-slot table plus effective show CPM and revenue per download
  • Reverse solve: the downloads per episode needed to hit a revenue target
  • Runs entirely in your browser with no host or ad-server connection

How to use the Podcast Ad Revenue Calculator

  1. 1

Enter your currency, average downloads per episode, episodes per month and any network or agency cut.

  2. 2

For pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll, set how many slots each episode carries, the host-read CPM and the fill rate you achieve.

  3. 3

Set the host-read share of inventory and a programmatic CPM for the remainder — leave the share at 100% if you sell everything yourself.

  4. 4

Read the per-episode, monthly and yearly figures, and check the revenue-by-slot table to see which slot carries the show.

  5. 5

Enter a monthly revenue target to see the downloads per episode you would need at these rates.

About the Podcast Ad Revenue Calculator

Podcast sponsorship is priced per thousand downloads, but the number that decides your income is usually fill rate, not CPM. An unsold mid-roll earns nothing however richly it is priced, so a show at 95% fill on modest rates routinely beats one at 60% fill on premium ones. This calculator gives every slot its own CPM and its own fill rate so you can see that trade-off directly.

Pre-roll, mid-roll and post-roll are modelled separately because they sell for very different money, and you can run several mid-rolls per episode. A host-read share blends your read rate against a programmatic rate for the inventory you do not sell directly, which is how most independent shows actually operate.

There is also a reverse calculation: name a monthly revenue target and the tool tells you how many downloads per episode it would take at your current rates. Everything is computed in your browser from figures you enter — no host, network or ad server is contacted.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good podcast CPM?

Host-read mid-rolls generally command the highest rate, pre-rolls somewhat less and post-rolls least of all, with programmatic inventory well below any of them. Rates vary enormously by genre and audience country, so enter what your own sales partner quotes rather than an industry average.

How many downloads do I need to make money from a podcast?

It depends entirely on your CPMs, slot count and fill rate — which is why this tool solves it for you. Enter a monthly revenue target and it returns the downloads per episode required at the rates you have entered.

What does fill rate mean in podcast advertising?

Fill rate is the share of your available ad slots that are actually sold. A 70% fill rate means three in every ten slots run unsold and earn nothing, which is why raising fill is usually worth more than negotiating a higher CPM.

Are mid-roll ads really worth more than pre-roll?

Generally yes, because a listener who has stayed to the middle of an episode is more engaged and much less likely to skip. That premium is why this tool prices each slot separately instead of applying one average CPM to the whole episode.

Does this include Patreon, merchandise or affiliate income?

No — it models advertising only. Memberships, merchandise, live events and affiliate links usually make up a large share of a mature show's income and sit entirely outside this calculation.
