About the Reading Level Converter

Schools rarely use one levelling system. A book has an ATOS level, the library shelves it by Guided Reading letter, the reading assessment reports a Lexile and the intervention teacher works in DRA numbers. This tool cross-references all of them, in any direction, from a correlation table you can edit.

It deliberately gives you a band rather than a single number. Lexile measures sentence length and word frequency; Guided Reading is a teacher judgement about text features and supports; DRA comes from a running record. They correlate, but they do not convert, and any tool that hands you one exact equivalent is overstating what it knows.

The Lexile column follows MetaMetrics' published grade bands. What Lexile level is a third grader?

MetaMetrics' published grade band for grade 3 is roughly 520L to 820L. Bands overlap between adjacent grades on purpose — a strong third-grade reader and a struggling fourth-grade reader read much the same books.

How do Guided Reading levels compare to Lexile measures?

Broadly: level M sits around 520–820L (grade 3), level P around 740–940L (grade 4) and level S around 830–1010L (grade 5). The relationship is approximate because Guided Reading is a professional judgement about text features while Lexile is a statistical measure of sentence length and word frequency.

Is there an exact conversion between reading levels?

No, and any chart that implies one is oversimplifying. The systems measure different things and were built for different purposes, so a conversion tells you roughly where a book or reader sits, not precisely. That is why this tool returns a range.

What is a DRA level?

DRA stands for Developmental Reading Assessment. Levels run from 1 to 80 and come from a one-to-one running record covering accuracy, fluency and comprehension, so a DRA level reflects a specific assessment rather than a property of a book.

Can I use my district's own correlation chart?
