About the Spelling Test Generator

The ByteTools Spelling Test Generator builds the whole set of sheets from one list. Pupils get a numbered answer sheet with ruled lines, name, date and score boxes, in one or two columns and at whatever line spacing suits the age group. Add an example sentence after a vertical bar and it can be printed under each line, with the target word replaced by a blank.

The teacher's copy uses a deliberately different order. The dictation list is shuffled with a seeded generator and reshuffled until it genuinely differs from the pupil numbering, so children cannot work out the next word from the sheet in front of them. The answer key stays in test order, so marking is a straight comparison.

What is look, cover, write, check?

It is the standard spelling practice routine: read the word, cover it up, write it from memory, then uncover and compare. The grid this tool prints gives one column with the word and two blank columns for the write-and-check steps.

Why is the teacher's dictation order different from the sheet?

If you read the words in the same order they are numbered, pupils can work ahead or copy from a neighbour's position on the page. Shuffling the reading order removes that, while the answer key stays in test order so marking is unaffected.

How do I add example sentences to a spelling test?

Put a vertical bar after the word and type the sentence: 'because | We stayed inside because it was raining.' Tick 'print the sentence under each line' and it appears beneath the answer line, with the word itself replaced by a blank.

How many words should a weekly spelling test have?

Ten to twenty is the usual range in primary classrooms, with fewer for younger children or for pupils working on a personalised list. The generator handles any length and simply adds pages as needed.

Can I get the same dictation order again next week?

Yes. The shuffle is seeded, so the same word list with the same settings always produces the same order. Pressing Reshuffle moves to the next seed, and you can press it repeatedly to cycle through arrangements.
