About the Round Robin Schedule Generator

A round robin is the fairest format there is: everybody plays everybody. This generator uses the classic circle method, where one team is held fixed while the others rotate one seat each round. That produces a complete fixture list in one round fewer than there are teams, with every pair meeting exactly once and nobody scheduled twice in the same round.

With an odd number of teams a bye is inserted, giving as many rounds as there are teams and exactly one team resting each time — and the tool names who is resting in each round. Home and away are balanced by flipping the pivot fixture on alternate rounds, so no team ends up hosting far more often than the rest; the home games stat shows the spread.

Turn on the double round and the whole schedule repeats with home and away reversed, which is how most leagues actually run. Copy the fixtures as text or download a CSV with round numbers, match numbers and home and away columns ready for a spreadsheet. Everything is built in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How many rounds does a round robin need?

With an even number of teams it takes one fewer round than there are teams, so eight teams need seven rounds. With an odd number it takes as many rounds as there are teams, because one team sits out each round.

How does the circle method work?

Write the teams in two rows and pair them off vertically. Hold one team fixed and rotate all the others one position each round. After one full cycle every possible pairing has come up exactly once, with no repeats and no clashes.

What happens if I have an odd number of teams?

A bye is added to make the count even. Whichever team is paired with the bye rests that round, and the tool names them under the fixtures so nobody turns up expecting a game.

How many games in total will be played?

Every pair meets once, so the total is the number of teams times one fewer, divided by two — 45 games for ten teams. Turn on the double round and it doubles to 90. The Fixtures stat shows the exact number for your list.

Is home and away actually balanced?

Yes, as closely as the format allows. The pivot fixture is flipped on alternate rounds, which keeps every team's home count within one game of every other. The home games stat shows the range so you can see it for yourself.
