How to use the Screen Recorder

About the Screen Recorder

The ByteTools Screen Recorder captures your screen, a single window or one browser tab straight from this page — no extension, no installed app and no account. Optionally record your microphone at the same time for narrated tutorials and bug reports; system or tab audio is captured too when you enable sharing it in the browser prompt.

While recording you get a live preview, an elapsed timer and pause/resume controls. Stop from the page or with the browser's own “Stop sharing” bar, then play the recording back and download it as a WebM file that Chrome, Edge, Firefox, VLC and every major video platform accept.

Unlike most online recorders, nothing ever leaves your machine: the capture is written to memory by your own browser's built-in MediaRecorder and saved directly to your downloads folder. There is no upload, no server-side processing, no account and no watermark — what happens on your screen stays entirely your business, from the first frame to the final file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my screen without installing anything?

Click Start recording on this page and pick a screen, window or tab in your browser's share prompt. The capture uses the browser's built-in screen-sharing and MediaRecorder features, so nothing is installed and nothing is uploaded — the file is saved from your own browser.

Why is there no sound in my recording?

Audio capture depends on what you share: in Chrome and Edge, choose a tab and enable “Share tab audio”, or share the entire screen with “Share system audio” ticked. Sharing a single window usually captures no sound. For narration, tick “Record my microphone” before starting.

What format is the recording, and will it play everywhere?

You get a WebM file (VP9 or VP8 video with Opus audio), which plays in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, VLC and uploads fine to YouTube and most platforms. If a client insists on MP4, run the file through our WebM to MP4 converter afterwards.

Why can't I seek in the recording right after downloading?

Browser-made WebM files sometimes lack a duration index, so a player's seek bar can act oddly until the file has played through once. Re-containering it with the WebM to MP4 converter also writes proper duration metadata and fixes seeking.

Is my screen recording uploaded or watched by anyone?

No. The recording is assembled in your browser's memory and saved straight to your downloads folder. This page has no server component for recordings, does not phone home and works even offline once loaded.

Does this work on phones?

Generally no — mobile browsers do not support the screen-capture API this tool relies on. Use it on a desktop or laptop with a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox; phones have OS-level screen recorders built in.
