Frequently asked questions

Is my voice recording uploaded anywhere?

No. Recording happens entirely inside your browser using the built-in MediaRecorder API. The audio lives only in your tab's memory until you download it, and it disappears when you close the tab. There is no server involved at all.

Why does the browser ask for microphone permission?

Browsers require your explicit consent before any page can access the microphone — that is a security feature. The permission only lets this page record while the tab is open, and the mic indicator in your browser shows exactly when it is active.

What format is the recording, and will it play everywhere?

Recordings are saved as WebM with the Opus codec, which Chrome, Edge, Firefox and recent Safari all play. If you need MP3 or WAV for older software, run the downloaded file through the ByteTools audio converter afterwards.

How long can I record?

There is no imposed time limit. Practical limits come from your device's memory — hours of Opus audio are quite small (roughly 0.5 MB per minute), so long sessions are fine on any modern computer or phone.

The level meter is not moving — what is wrong?

Check that you allowed microphone access, that the right input device is selected in your system settings, and that no other app has exclusive control of the mic. Reloading the page re-triggers the permission prompt if you denied it earlier.
