Frequently asked questions

How does the vocal remover work?

It subtracts the right channel from the left and vice versa. Any sound recorded identically in both stereo channels — typically the lead vocal — cancels itself out, while sounds panned left or right survive. It is the same trick karaoke machines have used for decades.

Why can I still hear some vocals?

Vocals only cancel completely when they are mixed dead-center and unprocessed. Stereo reverb, doubled vocals and wide harmonies are not identical in both channels, so parts of them remain. Some songs cancel almost perfectly; others barely change.

Why does the bass or drums sound weaker too?

Bass, kick and snare are usually also mixed to the center, so the same cancellation that removes the vocal reduces them as well. That is an unavoidable trade-off of the phase-cancellation technique.

Is this AI vocal separation?

No. AI stem separation uses large neural networks that cannot run inside this fully-local, no-upload tool. This is deterministic phase cancellation — less powerful, but instant, free and completely private.

Does it work on mono files?

No. Cancellation needs two different stereo channels to subtract. A mono file has identical channels everywhere, so subtracting them would cancel the entire song.
