How much bass boost should I use?

3–6 dB is a noticeable but clean boost for most music. 9–12 dB is a heavy, deliberately exaggerated 'bass boosted' effect and will likely distort without the headroom option enabled — leave it on for boosts above a few dB.

What frequency should the bass boost be set at?

100 Hz is a good default that lifts kick drums and bass lines together. Choose 60 Hz for a deeper, sub-heavy boost that only affects the lowest rumble, or 150 Hz for a warmer boost that also thickens low vocals and guitars.

Why does boosted audio sometimes sound distorted?

Boosting bass raises the signal level, and digital audio hard-clips anything that exceeds full scale. The headroom option lowers the overall volume to compensate for the boost so peaks stay below the clipping point.

Does this permanently change my original file?
