About the Word Search Generator
The ByteTools Word Search Generator turns a spelling list, a vocabulary set or a topic glossary into a proper puzzle. Paste your words, choose the grid size, and decide which directions are allowed — across, down, diagonal, and backwards for older students. The grid is built instantly, with the leftover squares filled with random letters.
Placement uses randomised positions with backtracking when words collide, so overlapping letters are reused where they fit and every word gets a real attempt at placement. If something genuinely cannot fit — a fifteen-letter word in a ten-square grid, for instance — you are told which word and why, rather than getting a puzzle that is quietly missing an entry.

Frequently asked questions
How big should a word search grid be?
A good rule is a grid two to four squares wider than your longest word, and large enough that your words fill roughly a third to a half of the squares. For a typical ten-word list, 12 × 12 to 15 × 15 works well.
Why could one of my words not be placed?
Either it is longer than the grid is wide, or the grid filled up before it got a turn. Increase the grid size, allow more directions, or press New layout to try a different random arrangement — the message names the specific word each time.
How do I make a word search harder?
Allow backwards words and diagonals, use a larger grid so there is more empty space to scan, and choose words that share letters so the fillers blend in. Turning off the visible word list for older students is another common step.
Can I print the answer key separately?
Yes. The printable HTML download puts the puzzle and word list on page one and the highlighted answer key on page two, so you can print just the first page for students and keep the second. There is also a plain-text answers file listing each word's row, column and direction.
What happens to spaces and accents in my words?
Only the letters A to Z are kept, so spaces, hyphens, digits and punctuation are removed and everything is capitalised. Words of fewer than two letters are ignored, and duplicates are dropped automatically.
