About the Grade Curve Calculator

That makes the trade-off visible: a square-root curve helps low scores far more than high ones, while a bell curve can pull marks down as readily as up.
Curving is a policy decision rather than a formula, so the page states its assumptions and leaves them adjustable. All processing happens in your browser — the scores you paste are never uploaded, which matters when the list is a real class.
Frequently asked questions
What is the square root or Texas curve?
It replaces each score with ten times its square root, so a 64 becomes an 80 and an 81 becomes a 90. It lifts low marks substantially while barely moving high ones, and a 100 stays a 100.
How does a bell curve change grades?
Each score is converted to a z-score using the class mean and standard deviation, then rebuilt around the target mean and spread you choose. Scores above the class average go up and those below it go down, so a bell curve can lower marks as well as raise them.
Is curving grades fair?
It depends on why you are doing it. Curving to correct an unexpectedly hard exam is widely accepted; forcing a fixed distribution onto a class that genuinely performed evenly is not. Many institutions restrict or forbid curving, so check your department's policy first.
What is the difference between a flat curve and a top-score curve?
A flat curve adds the same number of points to everybody, keeping the gaps between students identical. A top-score curve divides every mark by the highest score and multiplies by 100, which stretches the whole class and helps stronger students proportionally more.
Can I use this for scores that are not out of 100?
Yes for flat, top-score and bell curves, which work on any numeric scale. The square-root curve assumes a percentage, because it is defined as ten times the square root of a score out of 100.
Do the scores I paste leave my computer?
No. The list is parsed and curved by JavaScript running in your browser tab, and nothing is sent to a server. That keeps real student marks private even though the page is on the public web.
