About the Grade Calculator

The ByteTools Grade Calculator works out your course grade the way a total-points syllabus does: every assignment contributes its raw points, so a 100-point exam matters five times more than a 20-point homework. Add each item as points earned out of points possible and the running percentage updates on every keystroke.

Each row shows its own percentage next to the totals, which makes it obvious where marks are leaking. The letter grade uses either the standard 90/80/70/60 cut-offs, a full plus-minus table, or custom thresholds you type in — because a B at one school is a C+ at another.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade in a class?

Add up all the points you earned and divide by the total points available, then multiply by 100. If you earned 163 points out of 195, your grade is 83.6% — a B under the standard cut-offs.

What is the difference between points-based and weighted grading?

In points-based grading every point counts the same, so big assignments naturally matter more. In weighted grading the syllabus assigns each category a percentage of the final grade regardless of point totals. Check your syllabus and use the matching calculator.

What percentage is an A?

Most US courses put an A at 90% and above, with 93% for a straight A when plus and minus grades are used. Cut-offs vary by school, department and country, so set custom thresholds if yours differ.

How do I work out my grade with missing assignments?

Leave ungraded work out entirely to see your grade so far, or enter it as zero out of its full points to see the worst case. The gap between those two numbers is what is still at stake.

Does extra credit work in this calculator?

Yes. Enter extra credit as points earned with zero points possible if it does not raise the denominator, or as its own row with a possible value if it does. Both are common syllabus designs.
