Underneath, a full grading chart lists the percentage and letter grade for every number of mistakes, which is what teachers reach for when marking a stack of papers and students want when working out how many they can afford to miss. Choose standard cut-offs, a plus-minus table, or a custom pass mark for pass/fail courses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a test score percentage?

Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply by 100. 18 correct out of 20 is 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%.

What grade is 7 wrong out of 40?

33 correct out of 40 is 82.5%, which is a B on the standard scale and a B- on a plus-minus scale. The grading chart in the tool shows every other outcome for the same test.

How many questions can I get wrong and still get an A?

On a 50-question test with an A at 90%, you can miss five. The chart lists the score for each number of mistakes so you can read the cut-off point directly.

Do all schools use the same letter grade cut-offs?

No. 90/80/70/60 is common in the US, but many courses use 93 for an A, and other countries use entirely different systems. Set custom values if your syllabus does not match the presets.

Can I use this for tests where questions have different point values?
