What is the Printable Lined Paper Generator?

About the Printable Lined Paper Generator

The ByteTools Lined Paper Generator draws ruled writing paper at the measurements paper mills actually use: wide ruled is 8.7 mm between rules, college ruled is 7.1 mm and narrow ruled is 6.35 mm. There is also a primary three-line ruling with a dashed midline for early handwriting, and a custom option for any spacing you like.

Beyond the rules themselves you can set a coloured margin line on the left or on both sides, add hole-punch guides for a US three-hole or European two- or four-hole binder, print name and date lines at the top, and change the line and margin colours to something softer than black.

What is the difference between wide ruled and college ruled paper?

Wide ruled paper has 8.7 mm (11/32 inch) between lines and is typical in primary schools, while college ruled is tighter at 7.1 mm (9/32 inch) and fits more writing on a page. Both are one click apart here.

How wide should the margin line be?

The usual US notebook margin sits 1.25 inches (31.75 mm) from the left edge, which is the default here. European exercise books often use a narrower margin, so the distance is a number you can change.

Why does the line spacing look wrong when I print it?

Printers usually default to 'fit to page', which shrinks the sheet by a few percent and throws the spacing out. Set the scale to 100% or actual size in the print dialog and the measurements will be correct.

What is primary three-line paper for?

It has a solid top line, a dashed midline and a solid baseline, giving young writers a guide for letter height and where the x-height sits. The gap between rows leaves space for descenders and for the teacher's marking.

Can I print lined paper without any margin or holes?

Yes. Set the margin line to 'no margin line' and hole-punch marks to 'none' and you get clean ruled paper edge to edge, which is what most people want for letter writing or lettering practice.
