Staff height is measured the way engravers measure it — the distance from the top line to the bottom line — so 7 mm matches most published sheet music and 10 mm suits beginners. Clefs are drawn as vector outlines rather than font glyphs, which is why the PDF prints them correctly on any machine. Everything is generated in your browser and no file is uploaded.
What is the Music Staff Paper Generator?
A music staff paper generator prints blank manuscript paper to your own specification: how many staves per page, which clef, whether to print a key and time signature, and how many bars per system. This one draws clefs as vector outlines rather than font glyphs, so the PDF prints correctly on any machine.
- Treble, bass, grand staff with bracket, alto and tenor clefs drawn as vectors
- Guitar tab (6 lines) and bass tab (4 lines) with TAB lettering
- All fifteen key signatures, with accidentals placed correctly for each clef
- Standard and custom time signatures, plus barlines at a chosen count per system
- Staff height in millimetres from pocket-score 5 mm to large-print 12 mm
- Multi-page vector PDF and high-resolution PNG, both drawn from the same geometry
How to use the Music Staff Paper Generator
- 1
Choose the staff type: treble, bass, grand staff, alto, tenor, blank staves or guitar and bass tab.
- 2
Set the paper size, staff height in millimetres, how many systems fit on a page and the margins.
- 3
Pick a key signature and time signature, or leave both off for completely blank paper.
- 4
Set how many bars are ruled on each system — zero leaves the lines empty.
- 5
Add a title if you want one, choose how many pages, then download the PDF or PNG.
About the Music Staff Paper Generator
Blank manuscript paper is one of those things you always need the evening before a lesson. This generator prints it to your specification: staff height in millimetres, systems per page, clef, key signature, time signature and the number of bars ruled on each line.
Beyond the usual treble and bass, it draws a grand staff with a bracket, alto and tenor C clefs on the right lines, and guitar or bass tab staves with six or four lines. The clefs and accidentals are drawn as vector outlines rather than typeset from a music font, so what you see in the preview is exactly what the PDF prints, on any computer, with no fonts to install.
Staff height is measured the way engravers measure it — top line to bottom line — so 7 mm matches most published sheet music and 10 mm suits beginners with large handwriting. Everything is drawn in your browser and no file is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
What size should music staff paper be?
Published sheet music usually sits around a 7 mm staff, measured from the top line to the bottom line. Beginners and young children write more comfortably at 10 to 12 mm, and pocket scores go down to 5 mm. All of those are presets here.
How many staves should be on a page of manuscript paper?
Ten to twelve single staves is typical for A4 or Letter at a normal staff height. A grand staff takes roughly twice the room, so six systems is a comfortable maximum. If you ask for more than fits, the tool tells you how many it could place.
Can I print manuscript paper with a key signature already on it?
Yes. Choose any of the fifteen key signatures and the sharps or flats are drawn at the start of every system, on the correct lines and spaces for the clef you picked — including the alto and tenor C clefs, which use their own placements.
Why are the clefs drawn rather than typeset?
Music fonts are not part of the PDF's built-in font set, so a typeset clef would be dropped or replaced on some machines. Drawing them as vector outlines guarantees the clef prints, at any size, on any printer.
Is guitar tab paper included?
Yes — six-line guitar tab and four-line bass tab, both with TAB lettering at the start of each system and the same barline and spacing controls as standard staves.
