About the Fraction Strips Generator

Fraction strips only teach equivalence if every strip is exactly the same length, which is why photocopied sets from different worksheets never quite work. Here every bar is drawn to the same overall width from the same geometry, so one half lines up with two quarters, three sixths and six twelfths on the page.

Pick bars, circles or number lines, tick the denominators you want from one whole through twelfths, and choose whether each part is labelled with its fraction. Colour is on by default and can be switched to greyscale for photocopying, and a blank mode removes both the fill and the labels so students shade the parts themselves.

Frequently asked questions

What are fraction strips used for?

They make equivalence and comparison visible. Laying the twelfths strip under the halves strip shows immediately that six twelfths is one half, and comparing thirds with quarters shows which is larger without any calculation.

Why do my printed strips not line up?

Almost always because the printer scaled the page. Choose 100% or “actual size” rather than “fit to page” or “shrink to printable area”, and every strip will be the width the preview shows.

Should I print fraction strips in colour or black and white?

Colour helps students track a denominator across a page, but it costs ink and photocopies badly. Untick colour for a greyscale set that stays readable through a copier, or use blank mode and let students colour their own.

What is the difference between fraction bars and fraction circles?

Bars are better for comparing and ordering because lengths are easy to line up. Circles are better for part-of-a-whole intuition and for connecting fractions to clock faces and pie charts. Both are generated here from the same denominators.

Can I edit the sheet afterwards?

Yes — download the SVG and open it in Inkscape, Illustrator, Affinity Designer or any browser. Every bar, circle and label is a separate vector object you can recolour or move.
