About the Add Crop Marks to PDF

This tool builds the print-ready file for you. It creates a larger sheet, centres your artwork on it at exactly 100%, and draws trim marks offset from each corner so they sit outside the bleed area rather than on top of it. You can add registration marks for multi-plate alignment and a small label recording the trim size and bleed, which is the sort of thing that saves an email exchange with the printer.

Mark length, offset, line weight and colour are all adjustable, so you can match whatever specification your printer has sent over rather than arguing with a fixed template. The file is generated in your browser with pdf-lib and never uploaded, which keeps unreleased client artwork off other people's servers while you are still preparing it.

What are crop marks and why does my printer want them?

They are short lines outside each corner of the page showing where the finished piece should be cut. Without them the printer has to guess the trim line, which is how you end up with a crooked or wrongly sized job.

How much bleed should I use?

Three millimetres is the usual standard for most commercial printing, though some printers ask for 5 mm. Bleed matters when colour or images run to the edge of the finished piece — ask your printer if you are unsure.

Why is the output page bigger than my artwork?

It has to be. The marks sit outside the trim area, so the sheet grows to make room for the bleed, the offset and the marks themselves. The artwork inside is still at its original size.

What are registration marks for?

They are the crosshair-in-a-circle targets used to line up the separate colour plates on a printing press. They are useful for offset printing and harmless for digital printing.

Do I need to add bleed to my artwork as well?

Yes, if colour runs to the edge. This tool marks where the trim will be, but it cannot invent artwork beyond your page edge — extend the background in your design application before exporting.
