Printable crossword — page 1 of 2
Words are laid out by a greedy best-intersection search: every square where a new word could cross an existing one is scored by how many valid crossings it makes and how compact the grid stays, and the whole process is repeated with shuffled word orders so the tightest layout wins. A word with no shared letter cannot be placed and is reported rather than dropped silently. Everything runs in your browser.
What is the Crossword Puzzle Generator?
A crossword puzzle generator arranges your words into an interlocking grid by finding every square where a new word can cross an existing one, numbers the squares that start a word, and prints the blank grid with Across and Down clue lists plus a solution.
- Greedy best-intersection search repeated with shuffled orders, keeping the tightest grid
- Proper crossword adjacency rules, so no accidental words appear

About the Crossword Puzzle Generator
The ByteTools Crossword Puzzle Generator builds a real interlocking crossword from a list of words and clues. Every position where a new word could cross one already on the grid is scored by how many valid crossings it makes and how compact the grid stays, and the whole process repeats with shuffled word orders so the tightest layout wins.
It follows proper crossword rules rather than just dropping words on a grid: the squares before and after a word must be empty, overlapping letters must agree, and a word may never run alongside another and create an accidental two-letter word. Squares that begin an entry are numbered in reading order and the clues are split into Across and Down.
Words that share no letter with anything else cannot be placed, and the tool names them instead of quietly dropping them. Grid, clues and solution are laid out in your browser and printed to PDF locally — no upload, no account.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make my own crossword puzzle with my own words?
Type each answer followed by a colon and its clue, one per line, and the grid builds itself. Spaces, digits and punctuation are stripped from the answer, so 'ICE AGE: the last one ended 11,700 years ago' becomes the entry ICEAGE.
Why could some of my words not be placed?
A crossword word has to cross an existing one, which means sharing a letter in a position that fits. Words with unusual letters, or a list where nothing overlaps, will leave some entries unplaced — add a word that bridges them or press New layout.
How are the numbers in a crossword decided?
Squares are scanned left to right and top to bottom, and a number is assigned whenever a square begins an Across word, a Down word, or both. The same number is then shared by the Across and Down clue starting there.
Can I print the crossword without the answers?
Yes. Untick 'Add a solution page to the PDF' and the download contains only the blank grid and the clue lists. The on-screen answers are a separate toggle, so what you see and what you print stay independent.
Is there a limit on how many words I can use?
The tool accepts up to 60 entries, though 10 to 25 gives the densest, most satisfying grid. Very long lists tend to spread out because later words run out of good crossing points.
