Frequently asked questions

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Take your target (90% for an A), subtract your current grade multiplied by the portion of the course already graded, and divide by the final's weight. With an 84% going into a final worth 30%, you need 104% — which is why the tool tells you when a target is out of reach.

How much will the final exam affect my grade?

Exactly as much as its weight. A final worth 20% can move your overall grade by at most 20 percentage points, and only if you go from a zero to a perfect score. The best and worst figures show your real range.

What if I don't know my current grade?

Work it out first with the grade calculator or the weighted grade calculator, then bring that percentage here. Make sure it covers everything graded so far except the final, or the result will be off.

Can I still pass if I fail the final?

Often yes. Set your target to your pass mark and look at the worst possible grade — if it is already above the pass mark, a bad final cannot fail you on its own, though some courses set a separate minimum exam score.

Does this work when the final replaces a lower grade?

Not directly. Grade-replacement and drop-lowest policies change the arithmetic, so calculate both scenarios — with and without the replaced item — and ask your instructor which rule applies.
