What is the Weighted Grade Calculator?

A weighted grade is the sum of each category's score multiplied by its weight, divided by the total weight. Homework at 92% counting 20% and an exam at 78% counting 80% gives an overall grade of 80.8%.

About the Weighted Grade Calculator

If your weights do not total 100% — because some categories are not graded yet — the tool tells you so and averages across what you entered, which is your true grade so far. Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight. Scores of 90% (30% weight) and 80% (70% weight) give (2700 + 5600) ÷ 100 = 83%.

What if my category weights don't add up to 100%?

That normally means some work has not been graded yet. The calculator averages across the weights you entered, which gives your grade in the completed portion of the course, and shows how much of the final grade those scores account for.

What is the difference between weighted and total-points grading?

Weighted grading fixes each category's share of the final grade in advance, no matter how many points it contains. Total-points grading lets the point values decide. A syllabus that lists percentages per category is weighted.

How do I find my grade if one category has several assignments?

Average the assignments inside that category first — the grade calculator does this quickly — then enter the single category average here with its weight.

Can weights be something other than percentages?

Yes. Any consistent numbers work because the tool divides by the total. Weights of 1, 2 and 1 behave exactly like 25%, 50% and 25%.
