About the Audio Equalizer (10-Band)
The ByteTools Audio Equalizer gives you the ten sliders from a classic graphic EQ, set at the standard octave frequencies from 31 Hz up to 16 kHz. Each band cuts or boosts up to 12 dB, and the change is baked into a new file rather than applied only during playback, so it travels with the audio everywhere.
Presets get you started quickly: bass boost for a thin mix, vocal clarity to bring a voice forward, podcast for spoken word, the loudness smile curve for quiet listening, and warm for taming harsh top end. Move any slider afterwards and the preset switches to custom so nothing is overwritten.
The whole chain runs in your browser through a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg. Nothing is uploaded and no account is needed. An optional peak limiter after the EQ catches the clipping that big boosts would otherwise cause, which is the single most common way an equalized file ends up sounding worse.
Frequently asked questions
What do the ten equalizer bands actually control?
Roughly: 31 and 63 Hz are sub bass you feel, 125 and 250 Hz are warmth and boom, 500 Hz to 2 kHz carry the body and intelligibility of voices, and 4 kHz upward is presence, detail and air. Small moves in the middle bands change a mix more than large moves at the extremes.
How do I boost bass without the audio distorting?
Leave the peak limiter checkbox on. Boosting a band raises the peak level, and once peaks pass full scale the file clips and crackles. The limiter holds the output just below that ceiling. Cutting competing mid bands instead of boosting bass also works well.
Is it better to cut or to boost?
Cutting is usually safer. Removing 4 dB at 250 Hz to clear up a muddy recording sounds more natural than adding 4 dB everywhere else, and it cannot cause clipping. Use boosts sparingly and in narrow amounts.
Does equalizing an MP3 reduce its quality?
Slightly, because the file is decoded and re-encoded once. The tool exports at a high LAME quality setting so the difference is very hard to hear, but if you plan several rounds of editing, export to WAV and convert to MP3 only at the very end.
Will the EQ settings apply to my whole music library?
No. This writes a new file with the EQ permanently applied to that one track. If you want a curve across everything you play, use the equalizer built into your music player or operating system instead.
