About the IELTS Band Score Calculator

The ByteTools IELTS Band Score Calculator converts the number of correct answers you scored in Listening and Reading into band scores, then combines them with your Writing and Speaking bands to give your overall band. It handles the rounding rule that trips people up: an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0, while 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.

Academic and General Training are separate settings because their Reading conversions differ significantly. General Training texts are easier, so you need noticeably more correct answers for the same band — 34 out of 40 for a band 7 against 30 for Academic. Listening uses the same table for both modules.

Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

Add your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking bands, divide by four, then round to the nearest half band. An average that lands exactly on .25 or .75 rounds up, so 6.25 becomes 6.5 and 6.75 becomes 7.0.

How many correct answers do I need for a band 7 in IELTS Reading?

Around 30 out of 40 in Academic Reading, but 34 out of 40 in General Training Reading. General Training needs more correct answers for the same band because its texts are easier overall.

Why is my overall band lower than the average I calculated?

Almost always because of rounding. An average of 6.125, which comes from bands like 6.5, 6.5, 5.5 and 6.0, rounds down to 6.0 rather than up, since it is closer to 6.0 than to 6.5.

Is the IELTS raw score to band conversion always the same?
