Levels that fall between two rows of the conversion table are interpolated, so a decaying average of 3.53 sits proportionally between the percentages you set for 3.5 and 4.
Standards-based grading deliberately resists a single conversion: the whole point of reporting proficiency levels is that they say something a percentage cannot. Districts that do convert publish their own table and their own rule for repeated attempts, which is why both are editable here rather than fixed. How does a decaying average work in standards-based grading?
Each new score is weighted 65 percent and the running average of everything before it 35 percent. Scores of 3, then 4, then 5 give 3, then 3.65, then 4.53, so recent evidence dominates without older attempts vanishing entirely.
What does a 3 out of 4 mean in standards-based grading?
On a typical four-point scale a 3 means proficient — the student meets the standard as written. A 4 means they exceed it, a 2 is developing and a 1 is beginning. The exact wording varies by district.
How do you convert a proficiency level to a percentage?
With a conversion table your district publishes, such as 4 equals 100, 3 equals 85 and 2 equals 75. There is no universal mapping, which is why the table on this page is an editable field rather than a fixed scale.
Should the most recent score replace earlier ones?
It depends on your grading policy. Most-recent scoring reflects the belief that learning is what matters at the end, while a decaying average keeps some weight on the pattern of attempts. Both are offered here so you can compare them.
Why do standards-based grades resist conversion to percentages?
Because proficiency levels are meant to describe what a student can do, which a single percentage cannot capture. Any conversion loses information, so treat the output as a reporting requirement rather than a truer measure.
