About the Split PDF Pages in Half

Book and magazine scanners capture two facing pages at once, so you end up with a wide PDF where every sheet holds two pages of reading. This tool cuts each one down the middle and emits the halves in reading order, turning a 60-page scan into a 120-page document that behaves properly on a phone or an e-reader.

The cut is done with the page's crop box, not by re-rendering, so vector text stays vector text and a scanned image is never recompressed. Pages that carry a /Rotate flag are handled properly too: the tool works out which way the page is displayed before deciding which axis to cut along.

Everything happens locally in your browser with pdf-lib, so the file is never uploaded. Add a millimetre or two of overlap if the gutter text runs close to the seam, restrict the cut to a page range so covers stay whole, or reverse the order for right-to-left binding.

Frequently asked questions

Does splitting pages in half reduce the quality?

No. The tool changes each page's crop box and re-places the artwork, so the underlying text and images are untouched. Nothing is rasterised or recompressed.

My scan has a slightly off-centre gutter. What can I do?

Add one or two millimetres of overlap. Each half then extends a little past the middle, so a line of text sitting on the seam appears on both pages rather than being clipped.

How do I split a landscape PDF into portrait pages?

Choose the vertical cut. A 297 × 210 mm landscape sheet becomes two 148.5 × 210 mm portrait pages, which is exactly what a two-up A4 spread should give you.

Can I split only some of the pages?

Yes. Type a range such as 3-40 in the pages box. Pages outside the range are copied into the output unchanged, so a cover and a back page stay full width.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The cut is performed by pdf-lib running in your browser, so the document never leaves your device. It works offline once the page has loaded.
